March 2010

Well, the summer is over and autumn has started. That means the hot days are over, and we're seeing the last of the March Flies (which were early, as usual).

We've been working Carol's gelding Chappy (aka Rizalio NS). He's grown into a lovely horse and he's a smart cookie. So he's been a lot of fun.

For fun, I've started a facebook group called Paso!. Have a look in there and say hallo if you are interested in Pasos.

On other news, I've started studying at UB. I still have time to ride, but there won't be many outside horses started this year!

January 2010

A happy and propsperous new year to everyone!

The sales listing has been updated, as well as the gear for sale listing. In additions, several other pages were brought up to date (stallions, mares, links, foals).

We've had positive preg tests for Flamenca and Samba. We've also bred Molly to Rolly, and from this mating we've ordered a stunning filly :-).

Congratulations to John Simonetti on the purchase of Eladia NS and Intrepido NS. They've safely arrived at their new home in NSW. We had a lot of fun riding Eladia before she left Narrawin.

We had several visitors to the stud this month to see our stallions and horses for sale.

If you are interested in Pasos, please check out PasoCentral. I've finally done some updates and there will be more news regarding the Paso Registry shortly.

Last but not least I'd like to let everyone know that I will be commencing full times studies at Ballarat Uni from March 1. Therefore I won't be taking many horses in for training. Instead, I will use my spare time to start some more of Narrawin's youngsters and further educate the ones which are already going under saddle.

December 2009

We sent Narrawin Keyanna back home to her owner Geraldine in Melbourne. Keyanna was a lot of fun to work with her. So in a way I wasn't unhappy that we were delayed over and over during the cold and wet months. She is lovely (though of course I'm biased ;-) ).

I have continued writing my blog Chris's Thoughts on Horses. Some posts are about training, some on other stuff.

I stayed home for xmas and we just went out riding for fun and to exercise some of the more advanced young horses.

We bred MGR La Tigre (Imp.USA) to Ausome Compay and Samba to Chango NS. They'll be off for preg tests in early January. After a year off, it will be nice to see little critters on the place again!

November 2009

The cold weather has  made way for very hot weather. A real heat wave. Early signs of the summer to come?? We're working mostly some of our horses and Keyanna. The hot weather makes in a bit unpleasant, but it's a nice change from the cold and windy winter we've had.

October 2009

We didn't get a lot of work done with the horses due to the weather. So we did some house painting instead.

We had a visitor from Canada, David's mate from Leeds University. Also, Jana from Germany visited for the second time (last time in 2006) and we went out for a few rides together.

September 2009

The sales listing has been updated. The gear for sale listing has also been updated.

Congratulations to Laurel in Tassie. She took delivery of Benito NS on the 17th and it sounds as though he travelled well across the big water and has settled in well with his new mates.

August 2009

As August is drawing to a close, it's still wet and windy and cold! But finally, we can say we are getting some decent rain. You know, the sort of rain which fills dams. Luckily, our riding arena is located in a sandy spot and the footing is great even after heavy rain.

Elgur has gone home and in his place we have Nele's imported Icelandic mare Freya here for starting.

Here is a photo of Narrawin Keyanna (Wildmoor Pilgrim Son x Wildmoor Romantic Charm). Despite the horrible weather, she is coming along well:

Keyanna

July 2009

Brrr, what a wet and cold time of the year!! Good for ducks and polar bears. It is decidedly difficult to get motivated to go outside at times. It's a good thing that the days are getting longer, the wattles are in bloom and there is promise of rising temperatures from next month onward.

We have a couple of outside horses in work, very different ones at that :-) One is Geraldine's young Saddlebred mare Narrawin Keyanna (Wildmoor Pilgrim Son x Wildmoor's Romantic Charm). The other one is Nele's Icelandic gelding Elgur.

We've also been spending more time with Chango, Eladia and Bluey.

Caruso NS has been purchased by Danielle from Qld and he is on his way up there now. She braved the cold and ugly weather to come down and try him out and liked him. Eladia NS will be leaving us shortly for her new home near Bundanoon, NSW and Benito NS is headed for Tassie in early September.

June 2009

For all of you who are concerned with the way that modern dressage is headed, please have a look at Phillipe Karl's petition to the German FN. As the FN has so far chosen to ignore Mr.Karl's letter, he has asked for people to add their names to a list to support his petition. Please add your name!

May 2009

It's getting cooler and the rains are finally happening. We are having a lot of fun with Carisma and I've uploaded a few video clips to Youtube.

Carisma in Training

We have moved this website to a new hosting company (ours). We had a rather rocky changeover thanks to the lacklustre (I'm being diplomatic here) customer support at our old hosting company Ausweb.

Now it's all systems go and we are in a position to offer custom website design and web hosting. If you are interested, please contact us. I'll post more information shortly.

April 2009

We caught up with Len and Sue from Gunspring Peruvian Paso Stud. We've brought home their Carisma NS to start under saddle. We also brought home Armando NS, the colt by Ramirez who was at his dam's side when Len and Sue bought her a few months ago.

Easter came and went. Eladia and Bluey are coming along well with their training. A little bit more and they're finished for now. Being only just over three years old, we'll not do too much more.

I've taken more time to go riding, and have been enjoying Smokey, Max and Caruso. I've also dusted off Ramirez and reminded him what a saddle looks like. So hopefully I'll be working him more regularly shortly.

Ramirez - April 2009

Dominguero has left for his new home near Byron Bay. Congratulations to Natalie from Horse Connections on her new black and very special Paso :-)

March 2009

Most of March passed with doing work around the farm and house. Among other things, we built a new chook house. Chooks are happy! We re-housed the saddle and horse gear collection, finally unpacking the last of the stored boxes. I knew I had a lot of stuff, but there is more than what I remembered! It's high time I exercised some of those lovely saddles again :-)

The dry weather continues. The Marchflies have nearly gone again, but now we have big grey horse flies and lots of the little sticky black ones. I'm looking forward to cooler weather and no flies.

We had a little scare with a bushfire just a short way from here. Thankfully, the wind blew it away from us and the local bushfire brigade turned up mobhanded and brought it under control quickly, despite the horrible dry, hot and windy conditions.

February 2009

We delivered Narrawin's Dixie Courage to her new home with Bernadette Cincotta in Creswick. It's lovely to see one of ours go to a home in our area and hope to see her out and about some time when she grows up.

We had visitors from overseas, SA and Qld. Quite a busy month!

A horrible month it's become for so many residents of Victoria. The horrendous bushfires are a wake-up call for all people living in or visiting 'the bush'. Our thoughts are with the victims.

Narrawin's Rock Rose was purchased by Lyn Scragg and Narrawin's Night of Romance was bought by Di Saunders, both from the Adelaide Hills area. It seems that black fillies with long eyelashes are hard to resist ;-). Lyn's husband picked the pair of them up on the way from delivering hay to the bushfire areas.

January 2009

The second foal for the year was born. Another brown colt, very well gaited by Compay out of Samba.

With sadness we see Reina and Marisol go, but we are certain they will be well looked after at their new home with Sue and Len Giddens from Gunspring Peruvian Paso Stud near Ballan. Len and Sue now have a nice little herd of Paso mares which complement their lovely black Peruvian Paso stallion RTP Casino (Imp.CAN). Especially Reina was hard to let go, she's been a mainstay of our Paso mare band and she was very special in many ways. Above all because of her fantastic nature. We wish Sue and Len many happy hours with both mares and many lovely foals.

We also farewelled Narrawin's Morning Quest, Narrawin Timelord and Wantadilla Serenade who are all headed for WA to Richard Polglaze to help start a Saddlebred breeding programme.

Wildmoor Take the Blues Away left for Queensland. We wish Tamar Smith all the best with this pleasant mare and hope to hear about their new adventures.

December 2008

We wish everyone a lovely festive season, relaxing holidays and above all, a happy and prosperous new year.

Please check out our updated horse and gear sales pages!

The month started with our first foal for the season, a brown colt who will turn grey by Ramirez out of Reina. What a nice upstanding fellow he is, and what a pleasing variety of gaits he shows!

We have two geldings in work, Dacio and Ron. Both are progressing really well. We had a couple of stoppages due to inclement weather, such as this weekend, where the bad weather most of Victoria is experiencing has made the national news. The raingauge overflowed, and while we are not prone to flooding here, it sure has taken it's toll elsewhere. It's also been pretty miserably cold and windy. But it's lovely to see the rain and I'm sure it will be hot soon enough!

November 2008

Equitana has been and gone!

Max at Equitana

Max at Equitana

Max at Equitana

Well, as expected, it was a full on four days. The weather wasn't always kind to us. But Max behaved himself admirably, even under trying conditions and we stuck it out until the Sunday night. Thank you to all of you who came and saw us. It was great catch up with friendly faces, great to put some faces to names I've known for a while and it was great also to meet so many new people interested in what we have to offer.

More photos of Equitana, particularly (of course) of Max and our stand can be found here.

Equitana is coming closer! Please come and see us in the Breeder's Village at our stand.

We'll be a exhibiting a horse at these times:

  • Thursday 20 Nov - Breed Parade 3:30pm
  • Thursday 20 Nov - Breed Display 5:20pm
  • Friday 21 Nov - Breed Parade 1:30pm
  • Saturday 22 Nov - Breed Parade 1:00pm
  • Saturday 22 Nov - Breed Display 3:48pm
  • Sunday 23 Nov - Breed Parade 3:30pm

The breed parade shows all the horses from the breeder's village. The breed display for the times shown is just us, so we'll have the arena to ourselves. Watch us racking!

So make sure you come and see us!

Compay - groundwork

Meanwhile, back at the farm... We've started working Compay, who is being an attentive pupil. It is always a little bit more challenging to start a young stallion. But once you have their 'birdie' captured, they are just like rest and appear to enjoy the interaction. Thanks to Yvonne for capturing this photo, which not only shows Compay's birdie being fully on me, but also shows how softly he will follow my cues, and how well he steps under. Soon, I'll be riding him :-)

October 2008

Wow, October already! No wonder the christmas decorations are starting to go up in the shops! With it comes nicer weather. Less wind, more warmth. But a little bit more rain would be nice. But it certainly is more pleasant to saddle up horses and go out riding. And the horses look moth-eaten, losing huge chunks of winter coat. Not so long now, and we'll have the satisfaction of seeing them all in shiny summer coats.

Most of the visiting horses have gone home, Tandri from Haldane Icelandics is the last one here. He's been a lovely horse to work with. As a young man with attitude he earned the honorary title "King Eric" around here. However, he settled well into the work, and same as all the other youngsters, he was taken out accompanied by a mare, and had to go up the driveway past other stallions, mares in season and the like. And he coped :-) Here are some photos taken by Greg of Tandri and Flamenca going out together.

We will finally have more time to work on some of our horses.

We've started preparing for Equitana. We'll be part of the Breeder's village, so hope to see you all there.

We're looking into the possibility of another clinic at the end of the year (after Equitana) or possibly early in the new year. Please let us know if you are interested.

September 2008

We continued working the visiting horses.

Congratulations to Tarquin Stud and Celtic Stud on the purchase of Wildmoor's Romantic Charm.

August 2008

We've got several horses in work at present. Glimmer and Stirling from Haldane Icelandic Stud are due to go home shortly, both are going very well. You might see one of them at Equitana in November. When the two geldings go home, we will have the young stallion Tandri here for starting.

Nattfari is making excellent progress, and as expected, is very cool but has character. Interestingly, Jenny (who has a dog background) describes him as a 'hound'. I can only agree ;-)

The fourth horse in work is a purebred Arabian mare belonging to a local endurance rider. She is a different kettle of fish to the Icelandics indeed :-) Marlee is smart and switched on, and while she is not an a-typical Arab (is that a diplomatic way of putting it??), we are having fun and are progressing well. I have even forgiven her for stepping on my big toe which now is a lovely shade of purple.

July 2008

We successfully ran our gaited horse riding clinic on 26 & 27 July. We had participants from Victoria, Tasmania, King Island and New Zealand. The weather gods treated us kindly and so we had two full on days with plenty of riding. Please read our clinic report. It was lovely to catch up with old friends and meet some new ones. At the end of the clinic, our participants were 'horsed out' but very happy looking :-)

We thank Bill & Jenny, Brigid, Nele, Len and Laurel for coming. Enthusiastic participants make running clinics a pleasure! We also have to thank our equine helpers for being patient and allowing every rider to experience a range of gaited horses.

Bill and Jenny brought Nattfari so that we can start him under saddle. It's great to see him again, and he is a fun horse to work with. Rumour has it that he is being sorely missed at home. He is quite a funny character.

We bid farewell to three of our lovely Saddlebred mares. Winsdown Precious Resource, Wildmoor Firefall and Foxtrot Park Dixie Melody have left for their new home at Tarquin Stud in Queensland. Scarlett in particular (W.Firefall) has been with us from the beginning.

We have migrated this site from Ausweb to our own webhost. The changeover went smoothly aside from several problems with Ausweb's support in relation to our domain name.

If you are having problems accessing this site, encounter any broken links or other errors, please contact us.

Have uploaded the first clip to YouTube:

June 2008

The ASHAA AGM was held on the 8th June at Meredith (south of Ballarat). It was great to catch up with a lot of Saddlebred people. Several Queenslanders used the opportunity to drop in and see our horses.

We are considering holding another clinic here in July, possibly the weekend of . This will be a gaited horse clinic. As a tentative date, and depending on requests, it will be held over 2 or 3 days, either 25-27 or 26-28 July 2008. Please let us know if you are interested in attending so that we can send you a booking form and information. We can accomodate riders with or without their own horses and fence sitters are welcome for a small fee. More info will be on the clinics page.

Gear For Sale and Horses For Sale pages have been updated.

May 2008

I finally had my week off, which I spent with my friends Elyane and Rupen at Chillingham in NSW. Elyane is a naturopath and I highly recommend a visit to www.etbrightlight.com, which now includes an online store of beauty and health products in addition to loads of useful information. Yes, I didn't just play with Elyane's horses while I was up there :-) . However, of course we played with the horses, and it's great to see how much Narrawin's Mojo Man, Narrawin Oshun, Sorraia NS and Luba NS have grown up. I had a lovely week, thank you Elyane and Rupen!

On the weekend of the 17 & 18th May, Yvonne and I held a clinic here at Narrawin. The weather didn't do the right thing all Saturday, but as there was a fair bit of theory to cover and we had the use of the shed, the Saturday ended up a pretty full on session for our participants. Sunday was much better so the horses got a workout. Thank you to all our participants, who stayed keen and eager despite the unlovely weather. And thank you again to the patient equine participants (MGR La Tigre, VR Reina Real, Don Carlos NS, Wildmoor Pilgrim Son and the "visitors" Galdur, Glimmer and Sterling). For a fulll write-up, please see our new clincs & lessons page. This page includes clinic reports, feedback, pictures and notices of future clinics.

Galdur from Haldane Icelandic Horses has now gone home. His owners, Thea and Amy came to the clinic and had the opportunity to work with their big boy.

We now have the two Icelandic geldings Glimmer and Sterling here for starting.

I never cease to be amazed how most people's first question about a horse is the size (unless it's colour, in which case size comes next!). To me, the size of a horse is pretty irrelevant, although I'm quite tall. A horse is as big as it rides. A 16+ hand sloppy, lazy horse with no self carriage feels small and lifeless compared to a small lively horse with presence, the will to work and good self carriage. Sure, if I need a showjumper, I'll buy a big horse. But the pleasure riders have the great advantage of being able to choose what they please, so why the fixation with size?

On the left, you can see me explaining to Galdur that size does not matter, although my legs are longer than his! We jokingly came up with the definition of 'underhorsed', which is when the rider's legs are longer than the horse's :-) Judging by his 'so what?' look, he didn't worry, either!

April 2008

Foals due, For Sale, Links and Stallions pages have been updated.

Congratulations to Sue and Len Giddens on being the new owners of Caliente NS. Sue and Len are very excited about bringing a Peruvian Paso stallion from Canada to Australia. We are all looking forward to seeing RTP Casino's progeny from Caliente NS, Cortesana NS and Carisma NS, which are in Sue and Len's little Peruvian Paso herd. Casino is due to be released from Quarantine in mid May 2008.

AuSome Mulato and AuSome Primavera have returned to OliVaylle. Both were lovely horses to work with, although very different personalities.

We now have the senior stallion from Haldane Icelandic Horses here in work. Galdur is a horse of small stature but he has a big heart and beautiful gaits. He is a delight to work with. Photos coming soon.

Also in work are our own Narrawin's Walking on Air and Narrawin's King of Hearts.

We have scheduled a clinic at Narrawin for the weekend of May 17+18. Most places are taken, but we have room for another participant. You are welcome to bring your own horse. Emphasis will be on gaited horses and and horsemanship. We will incorporate clicker training in the program. We are very flexible in our approach and are happy to work with you on specific issues. If you can't bring a horse, we will provide one or more for you to work with. We have limited accomodation available but can recommend B&B's and motels in the area. We have yards available for visiting horses. Please contact us for additional details.

March 2008

Yvonne & I ran our first mini clinic here at Narrawin. We had five participants who came to learn about clicker training and general horsemanship. This was a clinic where participants didn't bing their horses. We used several of our own horses for demonstrations and hands on work.

A small thank you to our patient clinic horses:

  • Narrawin's First Lady
  • Caliente NS
  • MGR La Tigre (Imp.USA)
  • Narrawin's Walking on Air
  • Don Carlos NS

Most of our students didn't hesitate to avail themselves of the opportunity to try out a gaited horse or two during the two day clinic. We incorporated some riding in the clinic as well as in hand work, 'dry' exercises and theory sessions. Lots of lighthearted fun was had and everybody enjoyed themselves, the instructors included! But best of all, from an instructor's point of view, was the dedication and attention to details shown by all our students. The opportunity to pass on knowledge to an intelligent and receptive group is appreciated. We aimed at teaching useful horse skills during the two days. Furthermore, I hope that we succeeded in not only raising the level of expectation of our students, but that we gave them the ability to observe, evaluate, question and try to improve themselves.

I have some clinic photos which I will publish in a gallery shortly.

Together with Lise from Deadwood Farm, I attended a seminar in Haddon, held by the Queensland pastures improvement and landcare guru Jane Myers. I highly recommend any horse owner to attend one of these seminars. A range of topics are covered. Jane's Equiculture website has a lot more information and is well worth a visit.

We have sad news as well. It was time to say goodbye to a couple of horses. One of them is our all time favourite horses - Sam (aka Precioso). An old injury finally caught up with him and it was kinder to let him go than to prolong his pain. A very sad goodbye.

Congratulations to Peter and Carol Riebeling on being the new owners of Morena NS and Sorpresa NS. We wish Peter and Carol many happy hours with these lovely two girls. In return, Intrepido NS has returned to Narrawin Stud.

February 2008

How time flies! January is already behind us.

We welcome two new pets to Narrawin! Here is Simba. A photo of his brother will come soon!

Lion

For a bit of fun, went and tried my wits on a nerd test. Here are my scores:

To try for yourself, click on one of the scores. Have fun :-)

The horses we have in for starting are making good progress. AuSome Guajira went home to Olivaylle late in the month, and AuSome Primavera arrived.

January 2008

Happy New Year to everyone!

We had a lot of fun starting AuSome Zarzuela and AuSome Esperanza under saddle. Both have now returned to OliVaylle. Mirabel NS was also started under saddle, was then bred to Dominguero NS and has joined OliVaylle's broodmare band. We wish Jorge & Conchita heaps of fun with this very special mare and a lovely foal in the summer of 2008. We now have AusSome Guajira and AuSome Mulato here for starting. We also enjoyed starting the Andalusian x TB gelding Miko who has now returned to Becky, his owner in Enfield.

We heard from our friends Sue and Phil on the Sunshine Coast. They bred their Peruvian mare Evita to Narrawin's Romantic Courage last summer. Evita had an absolutely stunning palomino colt with plenty of gait. Kat Griffin in Newcastle had a stunning filly by Sovran's Midnight Express (Imp.USA) out of Celtic Sugar'n'Spice.

Our foals are coming along well and more photos are coming soon.

Please visit our for sale page which is always kept up to date. The gear for sale page has also been updated. Yes, we offer breeding packages. We will combine any two or more horses on our sales listing in a breeding package which will include a discount.

We enjoyed a brief visit from Helena Smith from Corryong. She stayed a few days to learn more about Saddlebred horses and a horse stud in general. As soon as the EI imposed movement restrictions allow, she is looking forward to bringing home Narrawin's Sudden Melody and Foxtrot Park Dixie Melody (in foal to Canyonleigh Flash Gordon at Badari).

We had a lovely surprise on January 6th in the way of an unexpected foal from a mare we were certain wasn't in foal. Morena NS had the most spectacular and well gaited chestnut filly. We will need to think of a fitting name.

Morena's filly

And here is the filly in action on the left. On the right is Reina's colt by Nattfari. He is approximately 2 months older than the filly. Both are very well gaited.

Morena's filly and Reina's colt

Here is another photo of Reina and her colt in gait. This colt is a mover!

Arvak NS - Reina's colt

We are considering of migrating our website to PHP. I will be doing a bit of experimenting in the next few weeks, but the transition should not be noticeable by visitors to this site.

Don't forget to keep checking the current state of EI in Australia. The Australian Horse Industry Council maintains an excellent web site with all the latest information.

December 2007

Domingo has left us to go to his new owners in Queensland. It is sad to see him go and we hope that he will produce many nice foals for his now owner Duncan Boyd.

The youngsters we have here in training are all going well and we are enjoying working with them. We will be adding some photos to the training page soon.

We've bred Narrawin's Lady Madonna to Smokey (aka Sovran's Midnight Express). Maddy will be leaving us shortly to go to her new home with Elizabeth Lawrence of Carlyle Stud in Tarrington, VIC.

David is home on leave and will be here for christmas this year, together with his fiancee Fifi. They will get married in early January.

Talking about family, I've become an aunt! My sister and her husband Tony have a son named William and my brother Jonas and his wife Trish have a daughter named Narelle.

  Domingo

Well, it's Christmas time, and here is our message :-)

Merry xmas 2007

Having seen such useful and entertaining blogs as fugly horse of the day, I decided to start my own blog about my thoughts on horses. Feel free to to read and comment :-)

November 2007

We are proud to announce the arrival of the young stallion AuSome Compay. We thank Jorge and Conchita de Moya for letting us have this outstanding Paso. Please see the stallions page for more details.

We have also been entrusted with the starting and training of the purebred Paso Fino fillies AuSome Esperanza and AuSome Zarzuela, which are now at Narrawin to start their careers under saddle.

The second foal for the season is also a filly. She is a big boned beautiful brown daughter or Sovran's Midnight Express (Imp.USA) and out of the Romantic Contract (Imp.USA) daughter Narrawin's Hearts on Fire.

Please see the foals 2007 Page for updates.

  AuSome Compay

To enable us to devote more time to the starting and training of horses and to helping people with their gaited horses, we have made the decision to reduce our breeding herd. It has taken years to establish the stud and we will be maintaining a smaller nucleus herd made up of our best mares.

We will also retain most of the stallions and continue to stand them at stud.

Please see our sales page for an updated listing of horses available.

Mares and foals

The last three foals have arrived. A bay colt Paso Creole colt by Nattfari fra Vindholar and out of VR Reina Real on 14th November. And a bay Paso Creole colt by AuSome Bolero out of Lucero on 17th November. And the last one, a bay part Saddlebred by Nattfari fra Vindholar out of Wildmoor Firefall. All three boys look like like they are well gaited and of excellent bone.

So that's it for this season! Please see the foals 2007 Page for updates and new photos.

Congratulations to Jenny Hall on the purchase of Marequita NS.

October 2007

Yvonne & Laura
Yvonne & Laura (aka Narrawin's Midnight Escapade)

With the better weather, we are working young horses again. We have started Caliente NS (for saled), Narrawin's Midnight Escapade (for sale), Narrawin's Dance All Night (for sale) and Mirabel NS. Morena NS and Caruso NS (for sale) are also in work.

This year I have the great luxury of a capable horseperson who is assisting me with working horses. Yvonne Lehey and her husband Greg have moved to our area, in fact they live just around the corner.

Yvonne has years of experience with horses and teaches riding as well. She specialises in clicker training and gives clinics on request. Yvonne and I have a very similar training philosphy and approach to horsemanship. We are a lethal team out riding or training the youngsters. Finally I have someone to accompany me when I take the youngsters out for their first ride. This on one hand is a safety issue, on the other hand it's more pleasant for the green horse. Last, but not least, I have someone to listen to my jokes :-)

There will be new photos on the training page soon.

Breeding season has started and the first outside mare has arrived. Foaling season also has started with the arrival of a lovely chestnut filly by Narrawin's Romantic Courage and out of Winsdown Precious Resource (Imp.USA). More foals are due any day now and news will be posted to the foals 2007 page.

The For Sale pages have been updated and new photos have been included for several horses.

September 2007

The weather is getting warmer, the horses are losing their winter woolies. There is just enough rain in our area to sustain some grass growth. Not everyone is this lucky, with many areas in a prolonged drought. Compared to that, some parts of Queensland are being flooded.

It is sad to hear that the EI situation in NSW and Qld is continuing to cause problems, with lockdowns in those states still current. My sympathies to all horse people whose businesses are suffering and whose pleasant horse activities have been curtailed. Whilst we are not in lockdown here in Victoria, it is still affecting us, as no mares can come down from NSW for breeding.

Let us hope that all horse people will cooperate to help get rid of the virus so that we can all breathe a sigh of relief. To those who flaunt the rules and ignore the procedures in place to help contain the spread of the virus - may you be found out and be dealt with.

The links page has been updated.

A sad announcement we have to make is that Bolero is gone. He punctured and lacerated his deep flexor tendon. Exploratory surgery showed that it was unlikely that he would recover, so we decided to let him go. We miss him terribly.

August 2007

30th August

Jana from Germany who stayed with us and helped around the horses has gone back home. We think she enjoyed her stay ;-)

The EI situation is still worsening in Qld and NSW but it looks as though the lockdown in Victoria will be lifted shortly.

25th August

Following the confirmation of Equine Influenza in horses stabled at Centennial Park in the centre of Sydney, the NSW Minister for Agriculture has issued an order to cancel all horse events and ban all horse movements in NSW. The horse "standstill" is on for at least 72 hours.

This has been updated to a nationwide lockdown as of 1pm on Saturday 25.8.07

Welcome to our latest addition: Canyonleigh Flash Gordon at Badari. We thank Sharon O'Reilly from SA for handing over the lovely old fellow to us. He is a beautiful horse and we invite you to inspect him. he will be standing at stud at Narrawin from September 2007 onwards.

We've had lots of questions about the horse in the picture at the top of this page. It's Narrawin's Romantic Courage. More info can be found on his page.

The list of links and sales page have been updated.

Please support the ASHAA Inc. 2007 stallion service raffle. Here is your chance to win a free service to one of several beautiful American Saddlebred stallions, including several of ours.

If you are considering a breeding to any of our stallions this spring, please request our breeding contract and mare booking form.

Someone has hacked into our site and made changes to some of the pages. This has been rectified and steps have been taken to prevent it from happening again. Why people need to spend their creative energies on causing trouble to someone else is something I fail to understand.

July 2007

July has seen more cold weather and a bit more rain. Every day brings us closer to spring and paddocks full of green grass. It is wonderful to see the day get longer.

We have welcomed several visitors to Narrawin. Although we warn everyone that at this time of year, the horses are very furry! Jana, a work experience student from Germany is staying with us currently.

We placed an advertisement in Horse Deals. We have been advertising in the stallion issue for some time now. This year, as most years, I supplied the artwork and all other material (photos, text etc) but it seems that my request to list all the stallions on their website was too much. And so the artwork I supplied was amended. In my opinion, the advert ended up looking far less professional and less satisfactory, and in the end our stallions in the listing didn't get the text I supplied anyway. I certainly didn't repeat our advert for the September issue this year. So I'm pretty disappointed and I will seriously consider our advertising options next stud season.

You can find on on page 72 in the August issue of Horse Deals. The original artwork can be found here.

There are new photos and updates on our gear for sale page.

The house is in it's final stages now and it's just great to see it nearly completed.

June 2007

June has been a quiet month, catching up with horse things and progressing the house.

We had two work experience students down from the Northern Territory. Jessica and Tehlecia spend two weeks at Narrawin. It was a pity that the weather was so awful for most of their stay, not only wet but pretty cold.

I went to the AGM of the American Saddlebred Horse Association of Australia Inc. in Sydney.

May 2007

Looks like the drought has broken! We are not out of the woods yet with feed for the winter, but after locking up several paddocks while the ground is still a bit warm, we might have a bit of green pick for later on. The upside is that the grass is growing and the dams are beginning to fill. The downside is the cold and wet weather and the muddy/underwater yards. But who is complaining?

Congratulations to Kat Griffin on purchasing Celtic Sugar and Spice. Kat actually bred the mare so we can be sure that Candy is highly valued!

We've sent the last of the sold weanlings on their way and have heard that they have all arrived safely at their new homes. We weaned the rest excepting Melody's freshly hatched filly. The poor little sod has grown a thick winter coat, but she is doing very well.

I've started working some of the green horses/youngsters again, such as Caruso, Laura and King. And I've been enjoying riding Smokey, Domingo and Flamenca.

We have sold a couple of our specialised gaited horse saddles. I will soon be adding a couple of other saddles to the listing, please check again if you are interested.

April 2007

The ongoing drought in Victoria and NSW is making a harsh impact on many livestock enterprises. We cannot claim to be immune from the consequences. Hay and grain are not only expensive but increasingly hard to obtain. This does not bode well for winter and with bare paddocks, we have decided to increase the sales list. If there is a special horse you are after, now is the time to contact us and get a beautiful Paso or Saddlebred at a very realistic price.

We are very pleased to have sold a number of horses to outstanding new homes, so we are congratulating new owners and are saying goodbye to:

  • Aidano NS and Ramona - going to NSW
  • Corazon NS and Danara NS - going to Sue MacIntyre on the Sunshine Coast
  • Intrepido NS - heading to C & P Riebeling near Bendigo
  • First Lord of the Daemons - going to Gordon Area, VIC
  • Anacita NS, Narrawin's Storm Cloud and Buenaventura NS - will be leaving for C & R Sims on the Sunshine Coast
  • Bjoska NS - heading to B Heyer in the Canberra area

Please see our updated Sales List for a chance to purchase an outstanding youngster, a proven broodmare or a stud colt at very reasonable prices.

On the 25th April, we had a late arrival for the season, a beautiful buckskin filly by Sudden Impact out of Wildmoor Take the Blues Away. She has not yet been named.

March 2007

We've started weaning foals. As usual, Sam supervises the kindergarten. He really is the most gentle stallion and teaches them respect without being too hard on them. The youngsters benefit from an older horse in so many ways.

I finished starting Lukka and took her to Jenny and Bill. I said hallo to Nattfari while I was there, and it was great to see him again.

Caruso is making great progress in his training and will become a fabulous gaited pleasure horse.

Sadly, we lost Magia. An old hock injury finally got the better of her and it would have been unkind to keep her going. She was the boss mare in the paddock right to the end and left us one last outstanding filly in Marequita NS. We miss Magia.

February 2007

Please note changes to available breeding packages below.

Congratulations to J & B Judson of Eurobin, Victoria on the purchase of Nattfari fra Vindholar. Also, congratulations to P & C Riebeling on the purchase of Intepido NS and C & R Sims from the Sunshine Coast on the purchase of Anacita NS and the as-yet-to-be-named colt from Sudden Impact and Celtic Sugar'n'Spice.

Lukka ridden

Meanwhile, we have Jenny & Bill's Icelandic mare Lukka here for starting and training. She is delightful and a very quick learner.

We are making arrangements for another Icelandic colt to come from NZ in May/June 2007. Stay tuned for details!

Currently in work are Caruso NS, Narrawin Corsair (owned by D.Lang, Toowoomba) and Narrawin's Midnight Escapade.

I had the chance to get away for a few days so I took a trip to the Adelaide Hills to visit Yvonne and Greg Lehey. I came home with MGR La Tigre (Imp.USA) and Luna Dorada NS. Both will join our broodmare team. Luna is a rare perlino and shows fabulous movement. We are indebted to Yvonne and Greg for the opportunity to breed this foal and for allowing us to purchase Flamenca (aka La Tigre).

I have added some saddles to the gear for sale pages, please have a look.

We introduce Tully, a purebred blue heeler pup, bred by Bluenip Kennels near Wangaratta.

Tully will keep an eye on things around here and give Vito a helping hand.

Really, we wanted a little red bitch, but we just could no go past this one!

  Tully

January 2007

In early January, we lost our friend and guard dog extaordinaire Sadie. We miss her greatly. She was with us for 11 years and she leaves big boots to fill. No doubt she'll be in a cool green place, calmly guarding a large herd of horses and greeting visitors with a big bark.

Sadie in January 2006

Sadie - November 2005

On a nicer note, January saw the arrival of a Narrawin's Sudden Romance, a very good looking grulla colt by Sudden Impact out of Wildmoor's Romantic Charm. Only one more mare to go!

Congratulations to L Fisher of Sydney on the purchase of Rohana NS and Cirino NS, as well as congratulations to B Heyer from Queanbeyan on the purchase of Bjoska NS.

I often say that this place is like a zoo, but nobody believes me. See here what wandered onto the place in early January. Since those photos were taken, she has well untruly settled in...

December 2006

December saw the arrival of more beautiful foals. Otherwise, we kept busy with breeding mares, putting up fences and organising more hay! The current drought is certainly not making things easy.

Christmas day saw the first decent rain in ages and we are hoping that we will get more of the same in the new year!

Season's Greetings
(for all those who asked: the filly in the picture is Danara NS)

November 2006

Foals are arriving thick and fast, please visit the 2006 Foals page for the latest updates. There are several youngsters on offer, ranging in age from "to be weaned" to three years old. Some of the three year olds will be started as soon as time permits. Currently in work are Amadeo NS and Narrawin's Eye of the Storm and we are starting Caruso NS who is a smart and willing young fellow.

We and the furry critters are settling well into the new place. The house is making progress, and we even get the odd shower of rain. The weather varies from hot and windy to cold and wet and windy, the horses don't know whether to shed the rest of their winter coats or hang on tight!

We have looked long and hard at our little horse herd. As we have retained several home bred youngsters over the last few years, we have decided to let some of the older ones go. Please visit the sales list for a complete listing of horses which are currently on offer.

We have also put together several possible breeding packages. Please enquire about pricing.....

October 2006

We have finished moving to Dereel. All horses have arrived safe and sound. They were a fabulous bunch, loaded and travelled like charms - mares, stallions and youngsters. We are very proud of them! The move was tiring and we are very glad that it's all finished now. Everyone is settling into the new place. All the hard work is paying off but there is still so much fencing left to do. The stallions are in temporary accomodation and grumpy (they are creatures of habit!!), but are also getting the hang of it.

I have been able to take Max out for a couple of rides around the back roads of Dereel and he is taking letterboxes and cars in his stride. He greets all horses in his rather loud, stag-like roar (and there are a lot of horses in Dereel...). Still, for a stallion used to the wide open spaces at the edge of the Big Desert, he is going pretty well!

Congratulations to Tania Paget on the purchase of Narrawin Melisande. It was a difficult decision whether to let Mel go or not. We are sure that she will make an important contribution to Tania's breeding programme. Mel is now at Deadwood Farms to be bred to Lise's imported Stallion Commander before going to Tania's place in Queensland.

The first foal for the season has arrived. We welcome Sandy, a filly by Narrawin's Romantic Courage and out of Foxtrot Park Dixie Melody. It looks like a buckskin and she is as pretty as a picture. Please check out the 2006 Foals page for more info.

The second foal has also just arrived, a lovely bay/brown filly by Precioso out of Nikita, making her a full sister to Amadeo NS and Luba NS.

September 2006

WE ARE MOVING !!!

Narrawin Stud is being relocated to Dereel, near Ballarat in Victoria. You can contact us at the Kaniva address and phone number until early October. Website, email address and mobile phone number will remain the same. The new phone number will be advised on our contacts pages as soon as it is available.

During the move, we ask for your patience, as there will be unavoidable delays in answering emails and phone messages.

We have started moving horses across to the new place. They are a cooperative and patient bunch, with everyone just quietly walking on the float and travelling well. As every load arrives, they are being greeted enthusiastically by their mates already there. We are busy fencing, trenching and laying pipes, setting up troughs and steel yards.

Soon, the stallions will be moving across to Dereel. YES - we are accepting bookings for this breeding seasons. Please contact us for details.

August 2006

See our stud advert in the August issue of Horse Deals Magazine.

Congratulations to Tamar Smith from Toowoomba on the purchase of Rebel Run Maverick a.k.a. Harry. He has now arrived at his new home where he is joining two other Saddlebred friends.

One of the last pictures of myself riding Harry was taken at the Naracoorte Stockman's Challenge in October 2005 - it is shown in the events listing on the Horse Deals website. Harry and I are in the middle picture in the 7th Row.

April to June 2006

Fillies May 2006
And how they are growing.... (l.t.r.) Marisol, Imelda, Molly, Bluey

We've been busy handling and weaning foals. Dominguero and Bolero are being started under saddle, as is Laura. Curly and Carlos are in work and progressing well. In addition, I took Curly to a 2-day Horsemanship clinic with Dr.Deb Bennett in Mt.Barker in May. Debbie is a fountain of knowledge and aside from learning a lot during the lessons, we had loads of interesting discussions. To find out more about Debbie and see her huge online equine knowledge base, visit www.equinestudies.org. Click here for some photos of the clinic.

Over the first June weekend, I went to the ASHAA AGM in Sydney. It was a lively meeting and there were several changes to the board membership which will result in changes in the Association. We should soon see the long awaited update to the association webpages.

While touring NSW, I decided to catch up with my old friend Brigitte in Canberra. Brigitte and her daughter own Canyonleigh Olympic Flame, which was one of our foundation broodmares and the dam of Narrawin's Hunting for Gold and Narrawin's Eye of the Storm (Curly). Brigitte has considerable talent in graphic design, protography and cartoons. Brigitte did some great horse stud photography for us.

On June 10, we attended a trailride at Tarranyurk (north of Dimboola, VIC) with Curly and Harry. This was Curly's second outing ever, aside from the schooling weekend at Mt.Barker. Even after six hours of brisk riding, both horses were full of going (no wonder these horses were favoured by General Lee and his compatriots). Curly learned to jump logs, cross a river and go along in a group of horses - he passed all tests with flying colours. A big day for him (and for Harry under a heavier rider than what he is used to), and well done.

Congratulations to Tania Paget of Platinum Park Stud in Queensland, on the purchase of Rocky, a.k.a. Sudden Impact. It was a tough decision to let him go, but we feel that he will have more opportunities to produce foals for Tania than what we have been able to give him here. However, we are expecting three foals from him next spring/summer, which we really are looking forward to.

January to March 2006

Foaling is finished, the season was concluded with the arrival of Aidano NS.

The 2005 foals page is now finalised for the season, and the foals due in 2006 page has been added. Updates have been done to some of the mare pages and the breed info and saddlery pages. Enjoy.

Congratulations on the purchase of a Narrawin bred horse to:

  • Janet Carter, Wakool - Hidalgo NS, Peruvian Paso colt
  • Debra Lang, Toowoomba - Narrawin Corsair, Saddlebred gelding
  • Geraldine Kisielnicki, Melbourne - Narrawin Keyanna, Saddlebred filly
  • Len & Sue Giddins, Mt Wallace - Carisma NS, Peruvian Paso filly

December 2005

We had several enquiries for frozen semen from Sudden Impact for the 2006 breeding season. If you are located in New Zealand or Australia, please let us know asap if you would be interested as we want to determine the level of interest before going ahead.

Congratulations to OliVaylle Stud, VIC on Paso Creole fillies by Wildmoor Pilgrim Son and Ramirez. Congratulations also to Raphi Prowse, ACT on a Saddlebred colt by Sudden Impact and Lee Burman, TAS on a Saddlebred filly by Sovran's Midnight Express (Imp.USA).

November 2005

And the foals keep coming, to see the latest arrivals, look at our 2005 Foals page. Some are already spoken for, so please check the for sale page for youngsters still available.

I Updated several stallion pages and added new photos for Ramirez and King.

We Visited Equitana and caught up with a few friendly faces. I brought home two new saddles. Firstly a Luc Childeric dressage saddle - what a comfortable seat it has. Secondly, I bought a Startrekk Espaniola treeless school saddle from Natalie at Horse Connections, similar to the Brenderup saddle on our Saddlery page. I have never liked treeless saddles much, after riding in four different ones, but I love my Brenderup school saddle and after trying the treeless version I thinks it's great. Have tried it on Harry and must say that on a well educated, gaited horse, this saddle is like the icing on the cake. Like a ride in an armchair except you feel exactly what the horse does. I saw and sat in one of Natalie's Freeform saddles and I was impressed by it, too.

It always seems a daunting task at the beginning of the breeding season, but I'm starting to make inroads and mares are being bred. Next Spring/Summer, there will be Peruvian foals by Capoeira BSN (Imp.USA), American Saddlebreds by Sovran's Midnight Express (Imp.USA), Narrawin's Romantic Courage and Sudden Impact, as well as Paso Creole foals by Don Cristobal Mako (Imp.USA), Capoeira BSN (Imp.USA) and Precioso. And I'll have some special surprises in store for next spring :-)

We are sad about the loss of Celestino NS. He was only with us for a short time and held such promise, but some things are not to be.

I enjoyed a visit to Yvonne Lehey in the Adelaide Hills. I had the chance to ride Lady, a mare I bred which now belongs to Yvonne. Photos here.

October 2005

More foals arrived, to find out more: 2005 Foals page.

Congratulations to Yvonne Lehey on the purchase of Amadeo NS.
