Leo was a fabulous horse who never received the recognition and mares he deserved in Australia, mainly due to politics.
He was a showhorse and sire, producing Saddlebreds and National Showhorses in the United States and Canada, before coming to Australia. He was shown in harness and under saddle.
After coming to Australia, he was involved in a couple of displays in Queensland and then pretty much disappeared. His owners bred him a few times only and unfortunately, the few outside mares that were sent to him didn't produce foals.
Eventually, he came down south in about 2000. While at Narrawin, we used him for pleasure riding, discovering that he was a fabulous five gaited horse with great education, and happy to go out for a nice ride. The bad reputation he had turned out to be nothing to worry about as he was easy to handle and respectful, even around mares. Despite the fact, that at some point in his previous life, he had evidently been badly treated.
The show training and riding he had received from a young age had done little for his mind or his bones, and he started suffering from neck problems.
We bred him as much as possible during the short time we had him, which became progressively more challenging due to his back/neck problems, but in his last year at stud he got two mares in foal who subsequently both had outstanding colts.
In the end, he succumbed to his neck problems and we sadly had to put him down on 14.10.2003.
